GUIDELINES for LECTURE DEMONSTRATIONS ONLY

1. Forms:
    A. ENTRY FORM - Complete and send in with entry
         fee.   Download the Entry Form.

    B. BIOLOGICAL PROJECTS FORM   If your project uses
        humans, animals, molds, fungi bacteria, or viruses, you
        must complete this form and send it post marked by: 
        March 20, 2012.   Download the Biological Projects Form 
    C. ABSTRACTS - ALL LECTURE entries must send in 3
        copies of their abstract; which is a brief introduction of
        what your project is about, it is a discussion of the
        results, and outcome of your work. (See ABSTRACTS in
        next column.)  Postmarked by April 18, 2012.
    D. SAFETY CHECKLIST - must completed by all participants.
        Participants must sign, and bring the safety checklist
        with their projects on Congress Day. On Congress Day,
        put this form next to your project. The Safety
        Committee will inspect your entry and stamp your safety
        checklist form. Judging your projects will not be allowed
        without the approval of the Safety Committee and Stamp

2. Guidelines:
    A.    Lecture entries are for grades 7 through 12.
    B.     Students may enter as individuals only. No teams.
    C.     Fill out the entry form accurately and obtain the
            necessary signatures.
    D.     The use of the Scientific Method is expected.
    E.     Show your originality, creativity, scientific
            knowledge, and curiosity.
    F.     Students should not memorize facts but instead
            have a thorough understanding of the subject area
            and principles surrounding their project.
    G.     Students are required to stay in the Lecture room
            until all lectures have been judged.
    H.     Students should do the work on the Lecture
            Demonstrations. Parents and others may advise,
            encourage, inspire, and even demonstrate how to
            do something but students must do the work
            themselves.
3. Space, Size, and Display Boards:
    A.    The MAXIMUM table display area is defined as
            75cm x 75cm.

    B.     Use sturdy free standing regular (4 ft.) or taller
            displays that won't fall over or become top heavy.
   
C.     DO NOT put your school's name, or any awards earned
            previously on your display boards.
    D.     Display boards should include the: Title, Hypothesis,
            Materials/Equipment, Procedures, Experiment Data,
            Analysis, and Conclusion.
    E.     The Science Congress will only provide:
            1. Electrical outlets.
            2. A table or display/work area for presentation.

4. Abstracts:
    Abstracts must have a:
    A.    COVER PAGE - on your abstract cover put:
             1. your project title
             2. your name
            
3. school CODE ONLY, NO other information
            DO NOT
use plastic report covers, or binders
    B.    LENGTH - up to 3 pages including the Cover Page.
    C.    REFERENCES SITED include a minimum of 3
           information sources which were actually used
           including internet web sites not search engines.
           Personal interviews of scientists or individuals
           should be included as a source.
    D.    PAPER, FONT, and MARGIN SIZE:
                 ...8.5" x 11" paper, double spaced
         
                 ...Margin size: 3/4" to 1"
                 ...Font size:  10 or 12
            Abstracts may be hand written.

5. Judging:
    A.    Students should practice giving their presentation
            prior to the Congress.

    B.     Students will have 10 minutes to present and the
            judges will have 10 minutes to ask questions. Judges
            may extend their time to ask questions.
   
C.     Judges use standardized criteria to assist in their
            scoring. (SEE Judging Criteria)
    D.     Awards are presented within each group on the
            recommendation of the Judges.

    C. Fill out the entry form accurately and obtain the
       necessary signatures.
    D. The use of the Scientific Method is expected.
    E. Show your originality, creativity, scientific knowledge
        and curiosity.
    F. Students should not memorize facts but instead have
        a thorough understanding of the subject area and
        principles surrounding their project.
    G. Students are required to stay with their projects until
        they have been judged.
    H. ALL PROJECTS are required to remain on display until
        1:00 P.M. for public viewing. Removal of projects prior
        to 1:00 P.M. may affect the awarding of medallions
        and monetary awards.
    I. Students should work on the projects. Parents and
       others may advise, encourage, inspire, and even
       demonstrate how to do something but students must do
       the work themselves.

5. No abstracts are required for Projects.
